Skkynet’s DataHub middleware was used by ABB to support a highly redundant and secure network of OPC A&E and real-time data on the Trans Anatolian Gas Project (TANAP) in Turkey. The recently completed pipeline stretches for 1850 kilometers across Turkey, making up a significant part of the southern gas corridor, which is responsible for supplying more than five percent of Europe’s natural gas. The telecommunications, security and control infrastructure for the TANAP pipeline has been implemented by ABB’s process automation division and uses the DataHub intermediate program to support real-time and secure communications of high redundancy and alarm data. “TANAP is an important and prestigious project, not only for Turkey, but also internationally,” said Yakup Yilmaz, manager of operations technical support group TANAP. “It is essential for both Turkey’s energy security and Europe. The cooperation between TANAP and ABB and its various suppliers helped to achieve the project without problems and to achieve the success we achieved ”.
The pipeline is the longest and largest pipeline in Turkey, the Middle East and Europe. It will initially transport 16 billion cubic meters of gas per year, with a potential of over 30 billion in the future. Four metering stations and two compressor stations connected to a main control center ensure that the gas is transported safely and efficiently. Reliable data communication is essential for the safe operation of the pipeline. Every aspect of operation from equipment operating to leak detection is monitored, controlled, stored and transmitted between the remote stations and the control center. Hundreds of thousands of OPC DA and OPC A&E data values are tuned by DataHub through redundant, state-of-the-art fiber optic networks with VSAT satellite backup and are seamlessly integrated with SCADA systems for monitoring and surveillance control. “Almost all of the features that DataHub offers are used here,” said Sam Harrasi, PCS engineer for ABB, the project’s technical leader. “Some of the DataHub features we’ve used are unique to DataHub, features that other companies with similar products can’t even offer.” The DataHub architecture and the OPC tunnel approach are suitable for this project.
